What I Would Do If I Had to Start Over as a Virtual Assistant Today
May 04, 2026
If I had to start over as a virtual assistant today…
I wouldn’t do what most people tell you to do first.
I wouldn’t start with a complicated website.
I wouldn’t try to learn everything.
I wouldn’t wait until I felt completely ready.
Because I know how overwhelming it can feel in the beginning.
There are:
- too many resources
- too many opinions
- too many “must-do” steps
And underneath all of that is usually one quiet fear: “What if I do this wrong?”
When I First Started… It Didn’t Look Like a Plan
When I first started, I wasn’t building a business.
I was trying to figure out how to support myself.
I was living in Mexico, living off savings, and applying to anything and everything with little to no response.
At one point, I almost said yes to a 3am English teaching job — just to make something work.
And then I got a small opportunity.
A trial client.
That one client turned into a working relationship that lasted 7+ years.
But if I could go back and talk to that version of me…
I would do a few things very differently.
1. I Would Get Clear on the Life I Wanted First
Back then, I was focused on survival.
Now, I understand something much more important:
Your VA business should support your life — not control it.
If I were starting over, I would ask:
- What kind of schedule do I want?
- How much do I need to earn?
- Do I want flexibility during the day?
- What do I want my daily life to feel like?
For me, it was never just about work.
It was about:
- freedom from a brick-and-mortar job
- being able to support myself
- having time for things that mattered most to me
Those decisions are what guide my decisions now in my VA business.
2. I Would Choose One Simple Lane to Start In
I wouldn’t try to offer everything.
I would pick one simple lane and start there.
Something like:
Admin / Operations
- inbox management
- scheduling
- organization
Marketing Support
- content scheduling
- blog uploads
- email formatting
Client / Student Support
- responding to messages
- onboarding clients
- managing communities
You don’t need to do it all.
You just need to start somewhere clear. This allows you to easily tell client's what you do and how you can help them.
3. I Would Ignore the “Fancy” Stuff at the Beginning
I wouldn’t worry about:
- a perfect logo
- a complicated website
- downloading every freebie I could find
Instead, I would focus on:
- building basic skills
- being reliable
- learning how businesses actually operate
A simple online presence is enough:
- a short bio
- a clear description of what you do
- maybe a simple page or document
That’s it. It doesn't have to be complicated.
4. I Would Tell a Few Real People What I Was Doing
I wouldn’t try to build in silence.
I would tell a few people:
“Hey, I’m starting a virtual assistant business and offering support with [specific thing]. If you know anyone who could use help, feel free to connect me.”
That’s it.
It might feel uncomfortable.
But it’s also how opportunities start. Starting those conversations are so important when building your VA business.
It’s Okay If You Feel Unsure
If you’re at the beginning right now, it’s normal to feel:
- unsure
- overwhelmed
- like you don’t have it all figured out
You’re not supposed to.
This isn’t about being ready.
It’s about taking simple, sustainable steps forward.
